剧情梗概：
爱达（霍利亨特HollyHunter饰）是语言表达上有障碍的女人，她所有的心思情绪全都凭着那美妙的钢琴乐曲飘然而出。丈夫早逝，她只好带着女儿一起远赴新西兰改嫁给当地的殖民者斯图尔特。当他们到达新西兰的海滩时，丈夫嫌搬运钢琴麻烦，想把它扔在海滩。爱达在海滩边疯狂地弹奏着钢琴，宣泄着内心的不满与苦闷。邻居贝因（哈威凯特尔HarveyKeitel饰）听出了爱达内心的苦闷，于是用八十亩土地和斯图尔特交换了钢琴，并请爱达天天到他家来教他弹钢琴，承诺一堂课可以换回一个琴键。爱达欣然同意了。贝因深爱着爱达，通过一节节钢琴课，两人的情感渐渐滋长。剧情版本二：影片讲述一个苏格兰寡妇爱达，带着九岁的女儿远嫁新西兰。她是哑巴，但耳朵不聋，随身带有一架钢琴。从未谋面的丈夫是一个务实的汉子，他觉得劳师动众抬着笨重的钢琴穿越泥泞的山路非常不值得，于是把钢琴留在海滩上。一副毛利人打扮的贝恩斯用八十亩地换取了钢琴的所有权，当他把琴弄回家后，又提出让爱达教他弹琴，每教一课换回一个琴键。幕后制作:剧本创作在创作《钢琴课》期间，导演简坎皮恩随着对剧本思考的深入，越发明白必须要有一个客体来赋予故事以特殊性。于是，简坎皮恩在诸多方案里选择了以钢琴作为客体。简坎皮恩表示之所以选择钢琴，是因为钢琴不仅是文明的象征；而且从视觉上看，钢琴与新西兰土著人的生活也构成了鲜明的对照。演员选择导演简坎皮恩原本邀请西格妮韦弗出演《钢琴课》的女主角艾达，然而韦弗的经纪人拒绝了简坎皮恩的邀请。之后，简坎皮恩又邀请詹妮弗杰森李饰演艾达，但是由于档期原因，她也未能出演该角色。最后，霍利亨特获得了饰演艾达的机会。
