剧情梗概：
美国洛杉矶，25岁的罗伊表面是个推销员，实际却以行骗为生。他的女朋友迈拉是个妓女，打算同罗伊合伙行骗，却被罗伊拒绝。一次罗伊行骗失败，被人痛打了一顿，命在旦夕，他的母亲莉莉来看望儿子，猜出罗伊正步她的后尘成为一名骗子，遂恳请儿子原谅她的过去，并劝说他改行。迈拉向罗伊提出合伙经营一笔大生意，在被再次拒绝后，她便愤怒地指责罗伊爱上了自己的母亲。莉莉捞到了一些登记赌注时骗来的钱，被迈拉知道了，遂向大骗子博博·贾斯特斯告密。对博博十分惧怕的莉莉开着装有骗来的钱的汽车逃到一家汽车旅馆，没想到迈拉却尾随而至……罗伊被警察传唤去辨认他母亲那面目全非的尸体，罗伊认出尸体是迈拉，但他没有声张。莉莉企图带着罗伊诈骗得来的钱财逃走，却被儿子当场捉住。莉莉告诉罗伊：她之所以杀死迈拉是出于自卫，因为迈拉想勒死她。罗伊不顾母亲的哀求，坚持要她去自首，绝望中的莉莉甚至愿意同儿子做爱，条件是儿子将钱给她。就在罗伊退缩时，责骂儿子的莉莉无意将他拿在手中的玻璃杯打碎，被碎片刺中了喉咙的罗伊倒在地上死去。痛哭之后，莉莉将掉在地板上的钱收起来，逃离了现场。
