剧情梗概：
李宝莉是那个年代所有男青年梦寐以求的终生伴侣——有样貌有工作。小学文化的宝莉爱慕大学生邻居王仲，可当王仲当着自己面称呼别人“亲爱的”，她的梦想坍塌了，这三个字从此成为她的人生情节。宝莉舍弃了痴情的追求者郑坚，嫁给人品差劲却会以“亲爱的”做情书开头的大学生工人马学武。八年后，趾高气扬的厂办主任太太李宝莉，住进了计划体制内的两居室楼房。不料，命运和时代开起玩笑——马学武移情，却怪罪于宝莉与郑坚的往事。宝莉的妹妹气愤不过，匿名报警。马学武被公安局捉奸，随后遭遇撤职、下岗。接踵的打击最终把这个懦弱的人逼进了长江。执拗的宝莉为了“亲爱的”人生信仰，做起长江边上的“女扁担”，负着独立养家的重任。几年后，宝莉成功回到了家乡，郑坚与宝莉再次相见成了一对欢喜冤家。然而，生活状态的迥异、经济上的差距、自由与稳定之间的矛盾使宝莉与郑坚的情感摩擦不断，人到中年，身背包袱，二人在摩擦中重拾了感情，如青年人般轰轰烈烈地谈了一次真正的恋爱……宝莉奉献的肝脏换来“亲爱的”儿子的忏悔。她向命运和世人证明——有信仰，人生就会美好。
