剧情梗概：
讲述了河北省保定市小嘎子在老钟叔，老罗叔，区队长，奶奶的引导下，成为一名名副其实的八路战士的过程。电视剧在忠实《小兵张嘎》原著故事线索，氛围环境的基础上，丰富了嘎子的性格命运。展示了嘎子、胖墩、玉英、佟乐四个孩子，在抗日烽火中的戏剧故事和富于传奇的童稚友谊。故事以抗日战争时期的河北省保定市白洋淀为背景，以嘎子（谢孟伟饰）梦想参加八路，梦想得到一支属于自己的真枪展开。奶奶为了保护八路老钟（杜源饰）牺牲了，嘎子只身上县城找罗金保（金宏饰），打鬼子替奶奶报仇。在县城结识了集贤居少掌柜佟乐（张一山饰），嘎子仇没报，反而陷入鬼子追杀。在佟乐和一个神秘便衣的帮助下，脱离险境。便衣原来是罗金保，将嘎子带到区队秘密隐藏之地，钱队长（崔金华饰）收留了嘎子。嘎子从此以小八路自居，紧接着又和区队八路打了一场挑帘战，嘎子缴获一把真枪。眼看梦想全部实现，枪却被区队长收了。嘎子想不通，和打赌认识的小伙伴胖墩（杜雨饰）一起重返县城。嘎子要单独替奶奶报仇。由此同时，后方特派员刘燕（钱多多饰）肩负使命路经白洋淀被伏击。刘燕不知下落，鬼子派了石磊（刘乃艺饰）冒充特派员混入区队。鬼子的计谋被嘎子无意中发现，嘎子和佟乐、胖墩行动起来，误认为区队联络员纯刚（宋军饰）是鬼子奸细。纯刚竟然被孩子制服，报信不成有口难辩。白洋淀渔户女儿玉英（王莎莎饰），打鱼时救了刘燕。刘燕受伤难行，请玉英去城里寻找联络员。玉英在城里遇到了嘎子一伙。三方力量围绕着真假特派员斗智斗勇，特派员肩负的任务迫在眉睫，大批药品将在指定时间内经过白洋淀。鬼子方面，龟田和斋藤（矢野浩二饰）一武一文，试图在最短的时间内，通过奸细石磊了解真相，将区队八路和药品一网打尽。区队钱队长则逐渐识破石磊真面目，将计就计引鬼子出动。而真特派员刘燕却与孩子们在一起。经过种种误会和巧合，以嘎子为首的孩子们，粉碎了敌人的阴谋，配合区队八路使药品顺利过境，一举歼灭龟田斋藤一伙日本鬼子。
