Mark's friend Sara reads her letter, which he left behind in class, and discovers the school is run by the Mater Lacrimarum, and is murdered for this knowledge. The book says that there are three evil mothers in the world. They spread horror and pain everywhere, and finally they are the three buildings of Architects in Rome, New York, and Fryburg in Germany.
