剧情梗概：
影片的主角是一个叫做杰克的11岁美国中西部的少年。他是家里三个孩子当中的一个。一开始，世界上的所有事情对他而言都是惊奇的。他按照自己的想法和心灵的指示做事。他的妈妈教会了他用爱与仁慈去面对这个世界；而他的爸爸却告诉他，想要在这个世界里混下去，必须把自己摆在第一位。父亲和母亲都希望杰克顺从自己，处在矛盾之中的杰克只能靠自己的力量调节这两种相悖的思想。在目睹了饥饿、病痛以及死亡之后，杰克的心理受到了创伤，而且开始渐渐开始迷失自己。而这个世界上的曾经一度令人愉悦和欣喜的事情，也开始渐渐变得令人难以捉摸。成年后的杰克生活得并不是太好。他丢掉了自己的灵魂，在当代社会中像一只无头苍蝇一样摸爬滚打。他希望能改变这个社会的面貌和他人的想法，可是到头来一切都是空想一场。他最终明白，无法改变社会的原因是，我们都是社会的一份子。于是，杰克开始换了一种眼光和角度来看社会。从新的角度看，社会里充满了奇迹、珍宝和无双的事物。现在的杰克已经准备好了去原谅自己的父亲，并且即将开始自己生命的新的征程。在故事的结尾，杰克终于明白了生命的真谛，他理解了爱、美、善、真。杰克最终发现，他的认知的起点就来自于自己的家庭－－那是他的第一所也是最重要的学校。在家庭里，他学习到了关于世界的真相、自我意识的起源，以及如何对这个世界施以博爱。
